Deepalaya was founded on July 16, 1979, with five children, two teachers and 17,500 rupees/investments from visionaries from seven like-minded founding members. At that time, preschool education had just begun. Since then, Deepalaya School has made great progress. Deepalaya is the "House of Light", Delhi's largest non-governmental organization, providing services to economically marginalized children, their families and communities in Delhi and some rural areas in Haryana and Uttarakhand.
